This page explains how the information on vigabatrin.org is researched, written and kept up to date.

Sources

The site relies on three kinds of source, in this order:

  1. FDA prescribing information for each product (indications, dosing, warnings, storage), taken from the current labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA.
  2. Peer-reviewed research found through PubMed: randomized trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses first, then cohort studies, then smaller studies.
  3. Federal guidance, such as the NIOSH list of hazardous drugs, and published clinical guidelines.

Every citation is checked against its PubMed record or the current label before it is used. The numbers quoted on the site come from the source itself, not from summaries of it. All sources are listed on the sources page.

How claims are written

  • Each factual claim is followed by a numbered citation that links to its source.
  • When a study was funded by a company with an interest in the result, the site says so next to the finding.
  • When the evidence is mixed or weak, the site says that too. For example, hormone treatment works better than vigabatrin for many babies with infantile spasms, and the site states this even though the site focuses on vigabatrin.
  • The site does not claim that data exist when they do not. If no study has looked at a question, the site says so.
  • Studies about other medicines are used only to describe general problems (such as measuring liquid doses at home), and they are labeled as not specific to vigabatrin.

Plain language

Pages are written for parents and caregivers first. Medical terms are explained when they first appear. Clinical details, such as doses by weight, are kept exact.

Review and updates

The whole site is reviewed at the start of each year. Pages are also updated when a label changes, when an important study is published, or when a reader reports a problem.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, email contact@vigabatrin.org with the page and what you think is wrong. Factual errors are corrected promptly.
